About Us

HG1 Osteopathy was opened in 2010 and is owned and run by Jill Green BSc (Hons) Ost, MSc.

Jill graduated from Oxford Brookes University and has established her own practice in Harrogate. Jill is also an associate at one other osteopathic clinic in Yorkshire.

Before training as an osteopath Jill had a varied career that included seven years in nursing, three of which were spent in theatre covering general surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology and neurology.

Six years were spent as a marketing manager in the financial services sector, so she has a good idea about the stress and strain office life can inflict on the body – and mind!

Jill has a keen interest in cranial osteopathy and has completed a post-graduate course in Osteopathy in the Cranial Field with the Sutherland Cranial College, and continues to develop her skills in this area.

She is also a qualified acupressure therapist and can incorporate this into her treatment plans, where appropriate.

Jill is a registered osteopath with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) and is a member of The Institute of Osteopathy.

She taught one day a week for two years at Leeds Metropolitan University on the Master of Osteopathy degree course.

About your visit

What happens when I visit an Osteopath?

You will be seen by a fully qualified & GOsC registered Osteopath. As a new patient your first session will last approximately 1 hour.

We need to know about your general health, both past and present conditions, as well as any medicines you are taking. You will be asked detailed questions about your current complaint and past medical history. It is recommended that you bring a list of any medications you are currently taking and reports of any x-rays, scans or details of any other treatments you may be undergoing.

We will then carry out a physical examination, which may include taking your blood pressure, or using medical equipment to help with the diagnosis.

To examine you we will normally ask you to remove your outer clothing. Shorts and t-shirts can be worn or a gown can be provided.

As Osteopath’s we use our hands to palpate and identify points of weakness, strain or restriction in your body.

After the assessment we will tell you what we feel the problem is and how we would like to treat it. A treatment plan will be outlined. It is important that you feel relaxed enough to ask any questions you may have. If there were a concern about your condition or general health, with your permission, we would contact and refer you back to your GP or Orthopaedic Consultant.

An Osteopath treats by releasing and relaxing tight muscles and stretching stiff joints using a variety of massage techniques: rhythmic joint movements and muscle release techniques.

We may carry out spinal manipulations which are short, quick movements of the joints in order to help restore normal joint function and mobility.

We may also show you a series of exercises to do at home and suggest ways to improve your posture.

You may have a friend or relative present during the appointment.

After an osteopathic treatment some people may feel stiff or sore for a few hours while others are fine. This can feel similar to post-exercise soreness and varies from person to person.

Osteopathy:

A fundamental principle of osteopathy is that the body is a self-regulating, self-healing mechanism, constantly working to establish its optimum level of health.

The maintenance of good mechanical function is essential to good health. Problems in the framework of the body can disturb the circulatory or nervous system to any part of the body and affect any aspect of health.

Osteopaths use their knowledge of anatomy, physiology and biomechanics to rebalance an individual’s body so that it can function at its best.

This is done through working on muscles, viscera, ligaments, joints, fluid systems.
